Faculty

The School for a New Stoicism features the following faculty:

Massimo Pigliucci, Scholarch of the School. Massimo is an author, blogger, podcaster, as well as the K.D. Irani Professor of Philosophy at the City College of New York. His academic work is in evolutionary biology, philosophy of science, the nature of pseudoscience, and practical philosophy. Massimo publishes regular columns in Skeptical Inquirer and in Philosophy Now. He also curates the Figs in Winter newsletter of the School of New Stoicism.

Massimo’s books:

John Sellars, Associate Faculty. John is a Reader in Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London (where he is currently program lead for Philosophy), a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London (where he is Associate Editor for the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle project), and a Member of Common Room at Wolfson College, Oxford (where he was once a Junior Research Fellow and is a member of Wolfson’s Ancient World Research Cluster). John was previously a Research Fellow at King’s College London, working on the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle project and, before that, a Lecturer in Philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London.  He is a founder member of the London Centre for Ancient Philosophy, alongside colleagues at KCL, UCL, and Birkbeck.  He is also a member of two non-profit organizations aimed at bringing the ancient philosophy of Stoicism to a wider audience, Modern Stoicism and The Aurelius Foundation, and he is currently Chair of Modern Stoicism.

John’s books:

Anthony Long, Associate Faculty. Tony is a British-American classical scholar who is the Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus of Classics, Irving Stone Professor of Literature Emeritus, and Affiliated Professor of Philosophy and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley. He was educated at University College London (1957–1960) where he took a first class honors degree in classics and was subsequently awarded a PhD degree. Tony was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1989, Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy in 1992, and a member of the American Philosophical Society in 2009. He was awarded an honorary doctor of philosophy degree by the University of Crete in 2015.

Tony’s books:

Rob Colter, Associate Faculty. Rob is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Wyoming. An award winning teacher, his courses cover ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, Philosophy as a Way of Life, and other core philosophical topics. Rob is the founder and Director of Wyoming Stoic Camp, an immersive experience in living like a Stoic based in the high Rocky Mountains of Wyoming. He is also the Director of Wyoming Pathways from Prison, the University’s Prison education program, which offers Bachelor’s Degrees to students incarcerated in Wyoming’s Department of Corrections. Rob has written peer reviewed articles on Classical Philosophy and Philosophical Pedagogy, and writes articles on Stoicism and practical philosophy in public venues such as Medium, The Conversation, and Modern Stoicism.

Gregory Lopez, Associate Faculty. Greg is a practicing secular Buddhist and Stoic, founder of the New York City Stoics, co-founder and board member of The Stoic Fellowship, co-host of Stoic Camp New York, and on the team at the Modern Stoicism organization. He has published essays on Stoicism in the Stoicism Today blog and in The Philosopher’s Magazine, and has given several invited talks on Stoicism to groups ranging from small Unitarian congregations to over a thousand people at Stoicon 2020.
